This is a great program highlighted by the best of South American culture, namely, the grand Machu Picchu complex built by the ancient Incas. The Peruvian scenery is also delightful. As Machu Picchu was built on forested hillsides, culture and nature combine more dramatically here than most anywhere else on Earth.

Schedule

Day 00:

Arrival and orientation.

Day 01:

See the sights of Peru's capital of Lima, such as the Circuito de Playas beach and Larcomar for retail therapy plus fab views of Miraflores Bay. Also, you will the Museo de Oro, Plaza Mayor, and the Cathedral. And Jiron de la Union has great edifices sporting colonial architecture. Last but not least, the super Church of San Francisco, one of Latin America's greatest Christian centers, has a convent, cloisters and gatehouse dolled up in the Moorish style of Seville, Spain.

Day 02:

Embark on an early-morning flight to Cusco – "the navel of the world". Highlights are Q'oricancha—the Inca Temple of the Sun—and Cusco's Cathedral, which is dripping with great art. Also on the agenda are Sacsaywaman, Q'enko, Tambomachay and Puka Pukara.

Day 03:

Sacred Valley and overnight stay in Machu Picchu. Get a look at how the ancient Inca grew the crops that sustained their remarkable civilization in the Sacred Valley. Take a look along the way at how Peruvian arts are made. Also on the agenda are Pisac market and Urubamba – "the Pearl of the Vilcanota". Then it's off to the fortress town Ollantaytambo and a train ride to Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 04:

Machu Picchu awaits after a 20-minute bus ride up to the settlement. Get a great view from the Inca Guard House, watching the sun rise over Machu Picchu. A two-hour tour comes up next. After that you can relax and drink in the atmosphere. Then take the train back to Cusco around 3:30pm. Arrival time is 7:30pm.
