Zip from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado on a 25-minute flight. From there it’s a leisurely two-hour boat ride down the Madre de Dios River. Arrive at the lodge to be greeted with a welcome cocktail and lunch. Then it’s off to Monkey Island, a five-minute trip away. Be on the lookout for black spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, tamarins and the South American Coati. Enjoy a night cruise along the Madre de Dios River to watch alligators.
Hike for four hours through dense Amazonian jungle to the Lost Cocha, a preserved ecosystem with an astonishing amount of animals such as giant otters, caimans, turtles, tapirs, birds, and fish. Great swamps and marshes are here too. From a watchtower, enjoy fine views of the rainforest canopy.
It’s back to Puerto Maldonado by boat, from where you’ll fly back to Cusco.
