While there is a decent healthcare in Peru, there is also a need to advance the quality as well as reach those in need. Many in Peru do not receive proper healthcare due to poverty or living in a rural area. Some simply just do not have access to proper medical treatment. Volunteering with the Medical Project in Peru is a chance to help many of those in need of medical attention.

RCDP works with local clinics and hospitals to concentrate on the fields of general medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, obstetrics, neurology, dental, family medicine, psychology, counseling, social work, physical, occupational rehabilitation, rehabilitation for children, and others. RCDP also works with a mobile hospital that goes into rural areas and provides healthcare support. As a volunteer you will be working in these setting and becoming part of the team.

For those who are interested in the healthcare field or already practicing medicine, this project is in great need of your interests and talents. You will have the opportunity to help poverty stricken patients, and learn about the complexities of healthcare in a developing nation. Your support in this program could change people’s lives.

Skill/Qualification

You can be placed in this program even if you do not have a medical background. You will, however, only observe and help out in other ways than direct medical care. For those that are qualified to provide treatment, you must furnish a document stating you are either a medical professional or a medical student. Basic Spanish also mandatory to volunteer in the healthcare program in Peru. All volunteers are expected to be flexible, patient, adaptive and have passion and enthusiasm to serve the poor.

Volunteer's Responsibilities

Your actual responsibility during the healthcare project in Peru will depend on your skill and experience. Among general things, you might do are assist in consulting room, dispensary and help with physiotherapy, treatment of minor injuries, maternal help and childcare, assisting midwives on visits, and checking and recording patient's information.
Your work will might include:

  • Measuring BP, temperature, height, weight
  • Assisting doctors and medical staffs with health center tasks
  • Helping in health camps (if any)
  • Dispensing medications
  • Immunizations
  • Treating minor injuries or wounds
  • OPD or out-patient services
  • Providing tips to patients on health, nutrition and sanitation
  • Counseling patients
  • Assisting hospital’s administration
