Volunteer to help children as a friend and a caregiver as they deserve love, support, education and safe and healthy environments.

Years of civil war has ensured Sri Lanka will remain mired in poverty for a long time. The government is slowly rebuilding the country but it still cannot provide enough support to the orphaned children. The orphaned children in the big cities depend on local organizations or they face life in the streets with no little chance of a better future. The orphanages, started by many local organizations and some by government, not only house the children, they feed, educate and provide them clothes. With this, the children can start to dream of escaping poverty one day. RCDP works with these organizations in Sri Lanka in the beautiful town of Galle, about 117 km south of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The orphanages are doing a ince job of raising the children but they struggle financially and need dedicated volunteers.

Join the project now and make a truly positive impact on the lives of orphaned children while at the same time explore a fascinating landscape and culture.

Your Responsibility as a Volunteer:

As a volunteer in the orphanage project in Sri Lanka, you will work with the children for about 3 hours daily. Your work can involve:

  • Teaching, mainly English or any other subject if you can
  • Becoming involved in music, art, dance and other activities
  • Working on the personal hygiene of the children
  • Being part of cleaning and cooking activities in the orphanage
  • Working with children in the garden
  • Assisting with orphanage administrative tasks
  • Fundraising

About Orphanage & Pre-School:

The orphanage provides shelter to the orphaned children, many of whom lost their parents to the Tsunami. The orphanage runs a small PRE- SCHOOL located inside the orphanage. At present, there are 36 children aged up to 4 years who study in the school.

Skills required

You must have passion to serve the children and provide them with plenty of love. You will also have to be flexible and willing to learn newer things. English is widely spoken and understood by most Sri Lankans, so you can communicate with them in English. However, if you learn the local language you will be able to interact with the local children even better. During the language and cultural training program, you will be trained about the culture and provided information about placement details. So you will already be familiar with plenty of local issues before you start the orphanage volunteer project in Sri Lanka.

Project Location

Our projects are located in a beautiful town of Galle, about 5 hours drive south of Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. There are many beautiful villages near Galle that you can explore and get a glimpse of Sri Lankan culture and way of life. Kalutara Temple in Galle is one of the must visit places. Other places to visit in Galle include Peace Pagoda, Galle Fort and one of the turtle hatcheries in the coastal area. There are many good places to go out to eat and drink in Galle.

Volunteers can also travel to other historical cities like ancient capital cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, where you can explore ruins built by the ancient Kings. If you hike to "SIGIRIYA ROCK" you can witness spectacular scenery from the top. North East of Sri Lanka contains many famous beaches like Arugam Bay beach as well as monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums and art galleries.
