Like any other developing countries, Sri Lanka struggles to care for its physically and mentally challenged citizens. As a result, most of these citizens requiring special needs spend their lives uncared and unloved for. There are few centers that house them and care for them, but these centers are underfunded and understaffed. They struggle to survive and do their work properly.

RCDP is working with one of these places that houses and cares for the physically and mentally disabled children and adults. About half of the 100 residents of the center are people who were made homeless by tsunami. Many became orphans as they saw they parents disappear in the torrents of water. Join our volunteer project and help the center take care for the disabled and impoverished children and their families. Through your contribution and care, the children can feel loved and improve English and other skills. Volunteers working in this project can also work in our orphanage project as both projects are in the same location.

Your Responsibility as a Volunteer:

Your contribution will be invaluable as there are lots of things you can do. You can assist the staffs to conduct recreational activities and serve meals in the center. If you have first-hand experience of working with children with disabilities, your expertise can be very useful in the project. You can also donate medical supplies, provide the disabled children with plenty of love, compassion and care, as they are an effective means of improving their situation. You also have to try your best to boost their confidence by inspiring and encouraging them. You will teach them English, nursery rhymes and indulge in many creative activities.

Project skills required:

You should come with passion to love and serve the physically and mentally disable children. If you have the skill and the knowledge of treating disable children, you can contribute even more. If you do not possess these skills, you can still contribute a lot and learn from the center's staff. You must however also be flexible, self-motivated and should be willing to learn.

Project Location

Our projects are located in a beautiful town of Galle, about 5 hours drive south of Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. There are many beautiful villages near Galle that you can explore and get a glimpse of Sri Lanka culture and way of living. You can visit ancient historical cities, first capital cities like Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa, where you can explore the ancient ruins of the temples built by the ancient Kings. You can hike to "SIGIRIYA ROCK" and witness spectacular scenery from there. You can also visit North East of Sri Lanka and visit famous beaches like Arugam Bay beach and monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries, etc. There are many beautiful villages nearby for you to explore also. Venture there to get a glimpse of typical Sri Lankan culture and way of living.

Arrangement of room/food/supervision:

Volunteers stay with a host family during the first week of language and cultural program. In the host family, you'll be provided with a separate room and served 3 Sri Lankan meals a day. A typical Sri Lankan meal consists of rice and curries, which can be meat, fish or vegetable curries. Our host families are carefully chosen and all of them have experience of hosting international volunteers. The place is also safe and secure and the meals hygienically prepared. At least one member of the host family will be able to communicate with you in English. During your work, you'll also stay in a host family. If you want to stay in a hotel near the sea beach instead of a host family, you can do that for an additional fee of $10 - 12 per night. During the project period, you'll have 24/7 access to our office in Sri Lanka by e-mail or telephone. Our staff also will visit each you in every one to two weeks to see if you're satisfied with the project and have any complains.
