Many women and girls in Uganda have trouble with menstrual hygiene because sanitary products are expensive and hard to find in rural areas. Many can’t afford disposable pads, which leads to health issues and discomfort. There’s also not enough education about menstrual hygiene and reusable pads, which adds to the stigma and makes managing periods difficult. To solve this, we need to provide affordable reusable pads, educate people, and create a supportive environment for open conversations.
The RCDP Reusable Pads Volunteering Program in Uganda aims to improve menstrual hygiene by giving reusable pads to women and school children. We teach girls and women how to make their own pads and offer lessons on personal hygiene. Volunteers help by organizing workshops, distributing pads, and talking to the community. This program not only helps with immediate needs but also supports long-term solutions and reduces the stigma around menstruation.
To be part of the Reusable Pads Volunteer Program in Uganda, you should be dedicated to supporting young girls and women. It’s important to be open-minded and respectful. Skills in teaching, fundraising, and sewing are useful and can help you make a bigger impact. Your role in providing encouragement and sharing important life skills will also be valuable to the program.
As a volunteer in the Safe Pad volunteering Program in Uganda, you'll collaborate with social workers and the project team for 5-6 hours a day. Your tasks will include helping to organize menstrual hygiene workshops, supporting community outreach for distributing pads, and preparing packing bags and cutting cloth for pad production. You will also teach women and girls how to use a sewing machine and help organize fundraisers for the project.
Your work will make a significant difference in the community. By assisting with workshops and pad distribution, you'll improve menstrual health and hygiene for many women and girls. Your efforts in preparing materials and teaching sewing skills will empower them with useful skills and promote self-reliance.
During your Safe Pad Volunteer Program in Uganda, RCDP will provide your accommodation and meals. You can stay with a carefully chosen host family or in a safe, clean volunteer house close to your project and the city. Staying with a host family allows you to experience local culture in a secure setting. You’ll enjoy three meals a day from Monday to Friday. Our local coordinator will regularly check in and be available by phone 24/7 to ensure you are comfortable and well-supported.
