Teach English to children from disadvantaged families while immersing in local South African culture and widening your perspective on the world.

Schools in deprived area of South Africa need assistance as they lack enough funds and resources to provide quality education. English is the most widely spoken language in South Africa, therefore, students must learn it from their early years. But schools attended by children from poor families often lack the necessary environment to give quality education to the students. Teaching English Project aims at enhance written as well as spoken English language skills of these children. Volunteers can assist by taking classes, preparing curriculum or organizing various activities for the children to participate in.

Join our Teaching English volunteer project now and give hope to students to achieve a brighter future. You will find the students extremely eager to learn from an international volunteer.

Your Activities as a Volunteer

Volunteers can assist in activities that include:

  • Teaching conversational English, Math or Science to students aged 5 to 10-years-old primary school students or 11 to 16-years-old secondary school students
  • Reading literature for students to improve their comprehension as well as pronunciation skills
  • Providing theoretical and practical assistance and aid to teachers
  • Interacting with students during lessons or free times

Note: In South Africa, many of our volunteer projects are based in rural communities, sometime located at a great distance from the city limits of Cape Town. In each local community, we support multiple projects such as orphanages, schools, HIV/AIDS project, hospital etc. Volunteers will help or participate in more than one project during their experience. This multi-tasking presents a varied volunteering experience and extra help is greatly appreciated by the community.

Project Skills Required

For Teaching English in South Africa, the school requires a copy of your resume, which should carefully state your credentials and educations. This is because the schools only hire teachers with teaching certification, degree in education or some form of teaching experience to volunteer in the project. The regulation is strictly enforced.

Project Location

This project is located in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa. Cape Town is the quintessential melting pot: it is a city alive with creativity, color, sounds and tastes. While walking through the city’s streets and meeting its people, you will fall in love with its natural beauty, creative freedom and incredible spirit. Stellenbosch is located about 50 km east of Cape Town and has a population of just over 100 hundred thousand. It lies in a hilly region and is sheltered in a valley at an average elevation of 136m. The area around Stellenbosch is known as wine country and has a very lush environment.

Our other programs like located in Albertinia, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Riversdale. All of these places provide excellent volunteering environment.
