Volunteering in Botswana offers a unique opportunity for those passionate about wildlife and eager to make a difference abroad. Situated in Southern Africa, Botswana is renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity, attracting visitors with its abundant wildlife, including majestic elephants and lions. However, these iconic species face threats such as habitat loss, conflicts with humans, and poaching, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
Our volunteer program in Botswana aims to tackle these challenges head-on by partnering with local conservationists. Volunteers play a crucial role in protecting animals, restoring habitats, and promoting sustainable practices. Located in the Central Tuli Block, volunteers are immersed in the unspoiled wilderness, surrounded by iconic African wildlife and vast landscapes. Join us in making a meaningful impact while experiencing the beauty of Botswana's natural heritage.
As a volunteer, you’ll typically spend around six hours each day assisting with conservation efforts—mainly in the early mornings and late afternoons to avoid the heat of the day. Midday is your time to unwind: relax with a book, take a nap, play games, or, if you prefer to stay active, join optional tasks like reviewing camera trap photos, identifying animal tracks, or photographing local bird and insect species. As the day winds down, you’ll often enjoy breathtaking sunsets from rocky lookout points. If the weather is clear, evenings are spent around the campfire beneath a star-filled sky—an unforgettable way to end the day.
Your role includes a variety of activities. In data collection, you’ll help survey birds and mammals, contribute to giraffe ID research, check camera traps for nocturnal activity, and assist with gathering data for conservation planning. Conservation projects offer hands-on experiences like repairing fences, building waterholes, controlling erosion, and helping maintain the reserve. Through wildlife observation, you’ll encounter elephants, zebras, giraffes, and may even track elusive predators like lions, leopards, or hyenas. You’ll also take part in sleep-outs, spending a night under the stars while listening to the sounds of the wild. Finally, you’ll have plenty of chances to learn and explore by identifying local plants and animals, practicing tracking skills, casting footprints, attending conservation talks, and immersing yourself in the peaceful rhythm of the African bush.
To join the program, volunteers are required to complete an application form and have a basic level of English to communicate effectively. A copy of the return flight itinerary must be provided, and volunteers should have a moderate level of physical fitness to carry out daily field activities. Additionally, all volunteers must have valid medical insurance that includes emergency evacuation coverage to ensure their safety during the program.
The project is situated within the Central Tuli Block, a historically mixed-use area that has undergone a remarkable transformation into a wildlife sanctuary. Through the efforts of private conservationists, the region has been re-wilded, becoming a sanctuary for Africa's iconic species. Our program is dedicated to offering youth an authentic wilderness experience while simultaneously supporting the conservation objectives of the area.
