volunteer in uganda Are you interested in being a volunteer in Uganda? Do you want to get a glimpse of authentic Ugandan culture while helping those in need to improve their lives? Are equal access to education, healthcare and a decent quality of life, things you believe in?

If so our volunteer opportunities in Uganda could be just what you are looking for. Each program is set up to work with local charities and support groups on projects which directly benefit vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community.

Once a British colony, since Uganda gained independence in 1962 the people have lived through a lot of turmoil, including a military coup, a dictatorship, war and rebel resistance, and threats to the nation’s leaders.

Uganda’s warm and welcoming people may enjoy stunning scenery, the cultural benefits multi-ethnic societies bring, and a fast growing economy.

However, the gap between the well off and the poverty stricken, rather than shrinking as so many new opportunities for prosperity appear, actually continues to grow wider. This is why RCDP place volunteers in Uganda in meaningful and safe programs which help to break down these inequalities and create opportunities for all.

If you are already certain that a Uganda volunteer program is perfect for you why not enroll today? Or contact us for an informal chat or more information on how you can see the world and help make one small part of it a little brighter.

The volunteer experience was very eye-opening and I felt very much needed at the site. I would greatly recommend it.

What kind of volunteer opportunities are available in Uganda?

There is no experience in life that can be as powerful and meaningful as helping to make someone else’s life and future better. RCDP offer you the chance to make a difference in Uganda, either by supporting orphaned children or providing assistance to over worked staff in medical clinics.

Orphanage Project in Uganda

volunteers in uganda orphanage It’s a sad fact that many children in Uganda have been orphaned. Some have lost parents to poverty, disease (especially HIV/AIDS), and war. Other have been rescued from human trafficking situations – sold by their parents to uncaring employers, sex rings and (unknowing) foreign childless couples.

With so many children in orphanages in Uganda volunteer resources are stretched, but we help by working with ten of them, offering extra hands and hearts to help out with both the chores, and giving these forgotten children the attention and care they crave and deserve.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: If you love working with children and have a kind, flexible, caring and patient approach you are well qualified to volunteer at an orphanage in Uganda.

Volunteer Responsibilities: Volunteer Uganda orphanage projects involve a variety of tasks, although your main role will be to tutor the children in English. Support tasks such as helping them with personal care, doing a share of the household chores and organizing creative, fun sporty, arty and musical activities will fill the rest of your time on the placement.

Medical Project in Uganda

volunteers in uganda medical Unlike the major cities, health facilities in the suburbs and countryside often struggle to meet the needs of their patients, as medical resources in such clinics and hospitals are very often short of both staff and equipment.

In Uganda medical volunteers are really appreciated, as they can provide care, treatment and general health information to a lot of people who would otherwise get no help at all.

RCDP help these projects by recruiting suitable volunteers to assist local staff, with tasks matched to their individual circumstances. There are opportunities for people with lots of experience, right through to those with none at all, so these projects are a useful way to get some valuable practical experience in the field.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: There are no rules about needing medical experience or training to join this program, although of course either would be useful. Still, all applicants should share a strong desire to help those in need, and have a keen interest in medical topics. Factors such as age and background are no particular barrier, as we welcome and value volunteers from all sections of society, and from all age groups. So whether you are a student or a retired senior, or from any group in between, chances are we can advise on the role you could play to make the most of your skills and interests.

Volunteer Responsibilities: Uganda medical volunteer experiences can include a range of tasks, with exact duties decided by local staff based on any previous experience, related qualifications and personal interests you have.

Medical volunteers never get involved with surgeries or complicated and serious procedures, but there’s plenty of work to keep you busy. You can expect to help staff do things like recording a patient’s height, weight, blood pressure and temperature, organize medications, treat minor wounds and help deliver antenatal support.

The Fee and Dates

RCDP Uganda Program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.

Volunteer Program in Uganda

Every year hundreds of volunteers arrive in Uganda to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that money actually goes to host projects and host families. The local host projects (orphanages, school, and local NGOs) in Uganda are poor and need external support to run their programs. In our program, you will pay your fee directly to host families and projects up on arrival in Uganda. When you join our Uganda volunteer program, we will make sure that all of your money goes to the projects and host families. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($80 per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).

In Uganda, weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on locations, project types etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee.

Arrangements for Room/Food/Supervision

We organize safe, secure and comfortable accommodation and meals for our volunteers in Uganda. You may stay with a host family, which is a wonderful way to experience the true culture of this wonderful country. In this case you will usually have a private room and eat with the family.

The other option is to stay in a volunteer house, where rooms are mostly shared or dormitory style. An onsite cook prepares and serves three meals a day for you.

Uganda volunteers eat well, as many popular national dishes are influenced by Asian, English and Arab cuisines. From meat rich stews and flat breads, to tasty plantains and sweet doughnuts, every meal time will seem like a feast.

We really care about providing a meaningful and well organized Uganda volunteer experience, so local staff maintain regular contact with you during your placement to make sure all is well, offer advice and support, and answer any questions you may have. Of course someone is always available 24/7 in case of an emergency situation.
