What volunteer opportunities are available in Tanzania?

Wherever your interests, skills, and abilities lay there is an amazing, even perfect Tanzania volunteer project which would be the perfect fit. From supporting orphans who have lost their homes, and teaching youngsters English, to assisting medical professionals deliver basic care, there are so many ways you could be the next person to sign up and start making change happen.

Orphanage Project in Tanzania

volunteers in peru orphanage With high levels of poverty and HIV/AIDS sufferers many people in Tanzania struggle to get by day to day, and their future is likely to be pretty bleak. Unfortunately, many children experience the consequences of these hardships, and as a result their futures are unlikely to ever be as promising as they could be. Things need to change, fast, and RCDP are helping by supporting kind hearted and caring people like you who want to join a Tanzania orphanage volunteer program. With projects located in Moshi and Arusha, two large cities with plenty to do and see in your free time, this is a really worthwhile program to support if combining travel with giving back to the world is important to you.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: The only essential criteria needed to volunteer at an orphanage in Tanzania is that you are a caring, compassionate and child-friendly personality, and able to be a positive role model for the youngsters.

Volunteer Responsibilities : If you choose to volunteer in a Tanzanian orphanage your average work day will include teaching basic English for 3-4 hours, either on site or at a local school, with the rest of the day taken up with homework support, supervising personal skills development (such as how to clean your teeth), admin work, planning and running fun leisure activities, and sometimes helping with chores like cooking and cleaning.

Teaching English Project in Tanzania

Teaching English in Peru English is used in daily life throughout Tanzania but lots of people don’t have the chance to learn the language properly. If young people have the opportunity to study with native or fluent English speakers they can improve their abilities, and have a better chance of finding work in the growing Tanzanian tourist industry. Our volunteer teaching in Tanzania projects offer this chance to children aged between six and sixteen years old.

Skills/Qualifications Needed : The only qualification necessary to be an English teaching volunteer in Tanzania is to be fluent in the language. Teaching experience is not necessary, although it may help you feel confident about working in a classroom environment.

Volunteer Responsibilities: Volunteer teaching Tanzania projects are based in schools run privately, by the government or by orphanages. You get to teach English with a local teacher for a few hours a day, six days of the week, and during the rest of your working day you may be asked to help with admin tasks or organize fun and creative activities for the students to enjoy. These opportunities for them to interact with you in a relaxed atmosphere are invaluable.

Health/Medical Projects in Tanzania

volunteers in peru medical Outside of the inner cities many hospitals experience staff and resource shortages on a daily basis. Medical volunteers in Tanzania are urgently needed to help deliver basic healthcare, treatments and medicines to the rural populations who seriously depend on them. You can expect to work alongside a qualified doctor as a willing assistant. Exact duties are assigned on an individual basis, based on your background, interests, experiences and qualifications.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: Tanzania medical volunteers do not need to have any particular experience or qualifications in this field, although qualified medical staff or current students are welcome. [It’s a great way to get some practical experience, or learn more about how medicine and nursing works in other cultures.] Whatever your age, if you have a serious interest in this arena you are very welcome to join a program.

Volunteer Responsibilities: For legal and insurance related reasons volunteers are never allowed to carry out surgery or diagnose illnesses, regardless of their current job or background. There’s still plenty of work around though, and every task is important and useful. You may learn to take vital stats, give out medicine, treat minor injuries, update patient records and help local people learn basic self care practices.

HIV/AIDS Projects in Tanzania

volunteers in peru summer Many people in Tanzania are either living with, or at risk of developing, HIV or AIDS. The situation is serious, and of nothing is done to change things the situation could easily spiral out of control. Testing programs, counseling support and awareness raising campaigns are being provided by local hospitals, health clinics and non-government organizations to try to deal with this problem, but they all need people like you to join a HIV-AIDS Tanzania volunteer program, and provide the people-power needed to maintain these efforts. Your work will make a tangible difference to the lives of many people.

Skills/Qualifications Needed: Caring, understanding, empathic and patient people are ideal for this kind of project. You don’t need to have any relevant experience in this field, or special knowledge of the topic.

Volunteer Responsibilities: Most of these Tanzania HIV/AIDS volunteer projects have two major strands. One section deals mainly with treating those living with this condition, both physically and emotionally. You may undertake duties such as accompanying a local health worker on home visits to the patients involved, organizing and distributing medication, offering general support, and doing some basic admin work.

The other strand deals mainly with awareness raising, often carried out in small communities or with small groups. Many Tanzanians simply don’t know how to avoid being exposed to, or spreading HIV or AIDS, so they really benefit from the information based posters, and leaflets, as well as the condoms that workers on this program distribute.

The Fee and Dates

RCDP Tanzania volunteer Program starts every 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month.

Tanzania Volunteer Program

Every year hundreds of volunteers arrive in Tanzania to volunteer from UK and USA based organizations and end up paying up to $2500 to volunteer for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, only a small portion of that money actually goes to host projects and host families. The local host projects (orphanages, school, and local NGOs) in Tanzania are poor and need external support to run their programs. In our program, you will pay your fee directly to host families and projects up on arrival in Tanzania. When you join our program, we will make sure that all of your money goes to the projects and host families. Part of your fees also helps us to cover our expenses. The program fee is divided in as registration fee ($269) and weekly fee ($80 per week for room, food, coordination, and project donation).
Click to find the allocation of $269

In Tanzania, weekly fee is divided between room/3 local foods a day (50%) and project donation/support of local project staffs (50%). This allocation may be different depending up on location, project type etc. However, our coordinator will explain these issues before you pay the fee.

Arrangements for Room/Food/Supervision

RCDP volunteers never have to worry about where they will stay or what they will eat, as we make all of these arrangements ahead of time. We place all volunteers in Tanzania in a host family. Their house is always carefully checked, and will be safe and comfortable. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to truly experience real life in Tanzania.

On a Tanzania volunteer project you can enjoy three meals a day, In most cases these are based on traditional Tanzanian recipes, which could include ugali – porridge like dish, rice, meat, fish, bead and vegetables. The dishes are often quite spicy.

RCDP staff are always around to make sure you are settling in well and happy with everything. You will also have the number of the local program coordinator in case you need help or advice out of working hours.
