Sri Lanka suffers from rampant poverty and many people are hungry and disease ridden. Life expectancy is very low and many orphaned children have to fend for themselves. They move to big cities to survive and face exploitation. There are many local organizations and some government help to improve the lives of these children. The orphanages, started by many local organizations and government, not only house the children, they feed, educate and provide them clothes. With this, the children can start to dream of escaping poverty one day.

RCDP is working with one of these organizations in Sri Lanka .The orphanage is located in a beautiful town of Galled, about 117 km south of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. There are 173 children living in the orphanage and some are physically and mentally handicapped children. There is also a special school for children with Autism. Join our work in orphanage & school volunteer project and help these children by pouring your love and care. Through your help, the orphanage can better educate and train the children and give them a ray of hope for a better tomorrow.

Your Responsibility as a Volunteer:

As a volunteer, you will support the orphans and try to turn them into mature adults. For 2-3 hours everyday, you’ll teach English. You will also teach them about health issues, sanitation, music, art, dance and other physical activities. You can also help children with their homework and monitor their academic activities. You can take the children out on visit to museums, beach and different historical places in your free time with approval from the orphanage. Most importantly, you’ll provide them love and care and make them feel loved. You can also be involved in fundraising activities to help raise enough funds the orphanage needs to survive in the future.

About Orphanage & Pre-School

This Orphanage is run by the government which provides shelter to the orphaned children, many of whom lost their parents to the Tsunami. The orphanage runs a small PRE- SCHOOL located inside the orphanage. At present, there are 36 children aged up to 4 years who study in the school.

Skills Required:

You must have passion to serve the children and provide them with plenty of love. You’ll also have to be flexible and willing to learn newer things. English is widely spoken and understood by most Sri Lankans, so you can communicate with them in English. However, if you learn the local language you will be able to interact with the local children even better. During the language and cultural training program, you’ll be trained about the culture and provided information about placement details. So you’ll already be familiar with plenty of local issues before you start to volunteer.

Project Location:

Our projects are located in a beautiful town of Galle, about 5 hours drive south of Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. There are many beautiful villages near Galle that you can explore and get a glimpse of Sri Lankan culture and way of living. You can visit ancient historical cities, ancient capital cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa where you can explore the ancient ruins of the temples built by the ancient Kings. You can hike to “SIGIRIYA ROCK“ and witness spectacular scenery from there.

You can also visit North East of Sri Lanka and visit famous beaches like Arugam Bay beach and monasteries, temples, parks, churches, museums, art galleries, etc. There are many beautiful villages nearby for you to explore also. Venture there to get a glimpse of typical Sri Lankan culture and way of living.

Arrangement of room/food/supervision:

RCDP will arrange for your room, food, and supervision from the very beginning of the program until the end. Volunteers stay with a host family during the first week of language and cultural program. In the host family, you’ll be provided with a separate room and served 3 Sri Lankan meals a day. A typical Sri Lankan meal consists of rice and curries, which can be meat, fish or any of the vegetable curries. Our host families are carefully chosen and all of them have experience of hosting international volunteers. The place is also safe and secure and the meals hygienically prepared. At least one member of the host family will be able to communicate with you in English. During your work, you’ll also stay in a host family. If you want to stay in a hotel near the sea beach instead of a host family, you can do that for an additional fee of $10 - 12 per night. During the project period, you’ll have 24/7 access to our office in Sri Lanka by e-mail or telephone. Our staff also will visit each you everyday to see if you’re satisfied with the project and see if you have any complains.
