Teaching Project

Project Summary

Teaching English has become a highly sought-after skill in Panama due to globalization and the world economy. Speaking English allows people better opportunities for their career and also their communities. Because much of the economy of Panama is dependent on tourism, speaking English can offer financial rewards.

The public school system doesn’t exactly have the resources to educate on the subject of English. They lack qualified teachers. Your focus as a volunteer will be to both help the teachers understand the language better, as well as teach directly with the enthusiastic students. This project is excellent for those who want to share their knowledge with others and help build opportunistic futures for the people of Panama.

Skill/Qualification

No formal teaching experience or qualifications is required to volunteer in Teaching English project. We will however prefer volunteers who can speak little bit of Spanish, as they will be able to communicate better with the children and the staff at the project. Volunteers are required to have patience, flexibility and enthusiasm for teaching English, as the mentality of the people will be very different from what you’re used to back home. During teaching, volunteers are expected to wear decent clothes, no shorts, sleeveless shirts are allowed.

Volunteer's Responsibilities

Volunteers will be either teaching or assisting students with pre-established English curriculum. If you are interested, you can teach: art, physical education or other areas also. Classes are held from Monday through Friday. Volunteers are encouraged to use a number of methods to aide in the teaching of English, including: flash cards, singing songs, etc. You are also encouraged to hold debates and discussions as this can increase their ability to comprehend English better. You can also participate or organize in extra-curricular activities like games and plays.

Project Location

This project is located in the Azuero Peninsual of Panama on the Pacific Coast. It takes about 3-4 hours of drive to reach Cambutal from Panama City. The area inland around Cambutal presents you with scenic and incredibly refreshing scenery of rolling hillside scattered with cow farms. Cambutal is famous for beaches and nature that is untouched and pristine.

In general, Panama has a great many opportunities for you to explore. There are thousands of plant and bird species in Panama to observe. Panama City is close to many of our projects and volunteers are encouraged to take a short trip and experience the city. Panama City is the capital and the largest city and is full of history and urban splendors. For those working in projects in Azuero there are awesome sights to see on the Azuero Peninsula. There is Artisan fairs in Las Tablas and many festivals in Herrera. Panama is full of delightful beaches for volunteers to explore and relax during their free time.
