It’s very important for young Kenyans to have good ability to read and write in English. Without this skill, they will not secure a good career in future as English is one of two national languages of Kenya and is used in trade, commerce and communications. But not all Kenyans are native English speakers and they mostly learn English in school. The schools therefore become a very important place but due to poor financial conditions many rural schools and schools attended by students of poor family hire teachers that aren’t skilled or trained. This results in many students not developing required English skills.
RCDP has recognized this and is operating Teaching English project in Kenya. We’re now asking volunteers to join our project and help poor Kenyans to learn English and have a good career. You’ll find the students extremely eager to learn from a foreign volunteer and generally well behaved.
For Teaching English Project, the school requires a copy of your resume, which should carefully state your credentials and educations. This is required because the schools only hire teachers with teaching certification, degree in education or some form of teaching experience to volunteer in the project. The regulation is strictly enforced.
You will teach English focusing the official teaching material and curriculum. Other teachers will assist you during the initial phase and the head teacher will also guide you. You can however hold debates and discussions as this will often increase students’ ability to grasp English well.
Many volunteers during Teaching English project also take part in school’s extra curricular activities like games and plays.
RCDP will manage your accommodation, meals and will look after all your needs during your volunteer work in Teaching English project. You will stay with a host family during the project. You’ll be provided with a separate room and will be served 3 local meals a day. Our host families have been carefully chosen and will provide you with a safe and secure location. They’ll have experience of hosting foreign volunteers before and will provide meals that are prepared hygienically. At least one member of the host family will be able to communicate with you in English. Staying with a host family is a wonderful way to learn about the culture and the lifestyle of Kenyan people. RCDP will also call you or visit in every 2 weeks to check if you are satisfied and happy with the project.
