Climb Mount Kilimanjaro Via Marangu Route - 7 days

Make your way through a lush rainforest and a cactus-dotted desert on your way up Africa’s grandest peak.

Schedule

Day 0: Arrival and orientation.

Day 1: Depart from Nairobi for Arusha, the trailhead for Tanzania’s safaris.

Day 2: Start traveling to Kilimanjaro National Park. Once you arrive you’ll be rewarded with plenty of animals to watch. Head for Marangu. Ascend to an elevation of 2,800 meters.

Day 3: Pass the tree line during a steep ascent to 3,700 meters over five to seven hours.
Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll appreciate the grand mountain views.

Day 4: Hike through richly varied topography en route and through “the saddle” between Kibo and Mawenzi.

Day 5: A trek starting at midnight en route to Gillman’s Point, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular sunrise view of the crater’s rim at an elevation of about 5,700 meters. Descend for Horombo Hut and spend the night there.

Day 6: Descent to the park gate and be met from representatives from the hotel where you will spend the night.

Day 7: Return to Moshi to meet representative for host families/hostels.

Program details

$1,400 for RCDP volunteers.

The program fee includes:

  • pickup/drop-off from project site
  • domestic and in-park transportation in a modified 4-wheel-drive vehicle including a releasable roof hatch for photo and video documenting
  • a professional safari guide
  • meals on safari
  • wildlife reserve entry fees and camping fees
  • and accommodation.

The program fee does not include:

  • tips for safari guide and/or camp staffers
  • and personal items such as extra drinks and snacks.
