English is the second most popular language in Ecuador and the demand to learn the language is now at an all time high due to increase in tourism and international trade. However, the standard of English and trained English teachers is in short supply across Ecuador. As a result of this, it’s the poor who suffer the most as the schools they attend are mostly devoid of quality teachers, while the rich schools take away all the talent.

With this in mind, RCDP has teamed up with local partners to offer Teaching English project to our volunteers. As the standard of English is still low in Ecuador, our volunteers can contribute meaningfully and have fun volunteering. You’ll find the students extremely eager to learn from a foreign volunteer and generally well behaved.

Skill/Qualification

No formal teaching experience or qualifications is required to volunteer in Teaching English project. We will however prefer volunteers who can speak little bit Spanish as they will be able to communicate better with the children and the staff at the project.

Volunteers are required to have patient, flexibility and enthusiasm for teaching English as the mentality of the people will be very different from what you’re used to back home. During teaching, volunteers are expected to wear decent clothes, no shorts, sleeveless shirts are allowed.

Volunteer's Responsibilities

Volunteers will be either teaching or assisting students from kindergarten to elementary to high school depending on their experience and proficiency. If you are interested, you can teach: art, physical education or other areas also. Classes are held from Monday through Friday. Volunteers are encouraged to use a number of methods to aide in the teaching of English, including: flash cards, singing songs, etc. You are also encouraged to hold debates and discussions as this can increase their ability to comprehend English better.

You can also participate or organize in extra-curricular activities like games and plays.

Accommondation/Meal and Supervision

RCDP will look after your entire need during your volunteering program. During the project you will stay with the host family. You will be provided with a separate room but you will share bathroom facilities. We have chosen our host family carefully and they will provide with a safe and secure location for you to stay. They will have experience of hosting foreign volunteers before and at least one member of the host family will be able to communicate with you in English. Staying with a host family is a wonderful way to learn about the lifestyle and culture of Ecuador. You will be served 3 locals meals by the host family. The meals will be prepared hygienically. Our staff will also visit you regularly to check your progress and see if you’re satisfied with the project or not. So you can rest assure that you will be completed looked after while you volunteer in orphanage work project in Ecuador.
