Project Summary

This project focuses on working at women's cooperative in the hills of San Isidro that is about twenty minutes by bus from Atenas. The cooperative helps sustain local women and their families. Volunteers will be working in an agricultural environment that concentrates on alleviating poverty through communal partnership.

Skill/Qualification

There are no skills required to volunteer in the project. You should however be physically fit as the work can get physically demanding. If you understand Spanish, you'll be able to communicate with the locals and work more effectively, however, knowledge of Spanish isn't a must. You can also take Spanish classes while volunteering. If you have any technical skills, you may be of help for this project as well.

Volunteer's Responsibilities

There is much to learn about and contribute in the project. Volunteers will spend a lot of time learning the local ecological processes, biodiversity, and cycles adapted to local conditions. You will also work in the greenhouse to learn about the local practice and the local produce. You may have to visit the market to gain more local knowledge. Volunteers will work with local experts to learn and share pertinent information gathered from this project.

Project Location

This project is located in Atenas, a small town of about 5 thousand inhabitants. Atenas is approximately 41 kilometer from San Jose. The climate is mild and stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The area around Atenas is covered with sugarcane plantations and coffee farms. The central plaza is the main landmark of Atenas. Many locals go here to just relax, or to have coffee, or enjoy some ice cream as there are many restaurants, shops, and cafes. Within a short travel distance of Atenas there are numerous nature preserves, beaches, and other natural beauty for volunteers to enjoy.
