Knowledge of English language is considered a basic requirement in today’s competitive world. In Cambodia, it’s also become imperative to have good English to get good jobs. Rural schools in Cambodia, however, cannot provide English language classes to students because they are low on resources. Under such circumstances, students struggle hard to keep up with the rest of the world. You can volunteer to teach these children basic English in order to improve their chances for a brighter future.

Your activities as a volunteer

Volunteers will work primarily as English-teachers/instructors either in public and/or private schools. Depending upon the need, volunteers may be asked to assist in other extracurricular activities such as sports, games, etc. Volunteer’s duties include:

  • Teaching English in public schools, orphanages or universities
  • Assisting with creative and extracurricular activities (i.e. games, drawing, singing, dancing, etc.)
  • Taking the students on educational tours/field trips
  • Helping the students with homework and supporting their academic progress
  • Assisting in other school-related activities or programs

Project skills required

There are no specific skills or qualifications required. However, volunteers are expected to have some kind of teaching certification or academic degree. Volunteers must have the passion and interest to help these children. Non-native English speakers with a masterful command of English language might also be considered eligible for this project.

Project Location

Phnom Penh: Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia that is somewhat chaotic yet charismatic at the same time. Amid poverty and depravity, this city comes forward as a historical place worth a visit.

Battambang: Battambang is the second largest town of Cambodia and a popular tourist destination. This place is famous for its ancient temples, Buddhist shrines and the bamboo railway.

Pursat: Pursat is a beautiful city well known among travelers for its marble carvers and oranges. The waterfall and the floating village of Kompong Luong will never fail to captivate you!

Siem Reap: Siem Reap has developed itself as the center of modern Cambodia. The beautiful temples, old French shop/houses and shady tree-lined boulevards have decorated this city very beautifully.

Arrangement of room/food/supervision

RCDP International arranges room, meals and supervision for volunteers during the entire volunteer program. Depending upon the location of the project, volunteers will either stay in our guesthouse or with host family. Placements are usually in Phnom Penh or in/close to a provincial capital. Our Phnom Penh guesthouse is located in the center of the city (a notable Cambodian tourist city) near the Olympic Stadium and the Orussey Market, equipped with necessary modern amenities.

Our host families are very friendly and hospitable. They look forward to learning more about your home-country, culture and life. Whether you stay in our guesthouse or with host family, we manage clean but simple accommodations with a separate room (occasionally shared with other volunteers), shared bathroom with cold water (usually no hot water is available) and a fan. You will be provided with local meals thrice a day. Usually, volunteers have breakfast in either a small restaurant, with host families or at work. Some volunteers have lunch at the orphanage. If a volunteer has special dietary requirements (e.g. as a vegetarian or vegan), we recommend you stay in our guesthouse and not with host family, as meat is the basis of most local Cambodian meals.
