Are you looking for an affordable and safe way to explore a new country while also giving back to the people who reside there? RCDP International's volunteering with the Special Needs program in Antigua, Guatemala is an excellent way to do both!

RCDP International is partnered up with a local NGO’s that provide housing , alimentation, and healthcare to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities. These individuals reside at the project site and receive around the clock care.

This project currently houses about 240 residents and is greatly in need of volunteers to help care for them. Residents are unable to live independently and oftentimes their families do not have the resources to adequately meet their needs.

These individuals have a variety of diagnoses, including but not limited to, cerebral palsy, microcephaly, mental retardation, autism, and quadriplegia. The aim of this program is to help provide care for the organizations residents. Volunteers are needed to care for, play with, teach, and mentor the children and adults.

You can help provide these children and adults with the opportunity to receive to respectful and adequate care. Volunteering overseas with the Special Needs program in Antigua, Guatemala is an excellent way to give back to a community while having the unique opportunity to become fully immersed in it.

As part of this volunteer with the Special Needs project in Antigua, Guatemala, you will develop meaningful relationships with residents whom you work with. This will be an enriching, educational, and eye opening experience in a colorful and vibrant town in Guatemala.

Skill/Qualification

There are no specific skills or qualifications required in order for general volunteers to volunteer abroad with the Special Needs program in Antigua, Guatemala. You should, however, have a love for working with individuals with special needs, an open heart, be patient and flexible, as well as demonstrate independence and creativity.

Speaking Spanish can make sure volunteering experience highly rewarding. Therefore, If you cannot speak Spanish, we recommend enrolling in our Spanish Language Studies program, which can run simultaneous to your volunteer project or immerse in this program for a week prior to your project.

Professional volunteers are also welcome to apply, including but not limited to occupational therapists, physical therapists, doctors (especially gerontologists), nurses, psychologists, and social workers. Professional volunteers should be able to work independently in Spanish or willing to pay an extra fee for a personal translator.

Role of Volunteer

Your specific roles will depend on your interest, skills, and experience. You can participate in assisting the caregivers, teach the residents new skills, and enjoy doing fun activities such as painting, drawing, and crafts!
